Cosmetic Orthodontics - The Benefits & Options

There are many orthodontics options on the market today and they can be very confusing for someone wanting straight teeth. So below, we will highlight the pros and cons of each treatment option.

Historically, the vast majority of orthodontic treatment has always been carried out by orthodontic specialists. However in the last decade we have seen a seismic shift with a much higher percentage of patients being treated in general practice by dentists who have undertaken additional orthodontic courses and qualification in order to provide another option when considering orthodontic treatment.

For orthodontic treatment on children or where severe movements in teeth are required we would always still recommend our patients to seek specialist advice and treatment, which may include a referral away from the practice, however for adults who request minor alterations in how their teeth are aligned we at S3 dental provide a variety of treatment options.

Broadly speaking, there are two main types of orthodontic treatment

1) Wires and Brackets

2) Clear Aligners / Trays

In Eltham, Hinckley Wood and Haywards Heath we have a number of dentists who have undertaken additional courses in order to provide one or more of the many orthodontic systems we work with, examples of such systems include Clear Correct, Invisalign, Quick Straight Teeth, Fast Braces & Six Month Smiles.

No matter the system we ensure all of our patients are dentally fit first, this means a high level of oral hygiene and no dental disease such as gum disease or tooth decay.

Although each system works in slightly different ways, they all require regular checks at least monthly, to keep a close eye on tooth movement and to make any necessary modifications to the trays or wires.

Wires and Brackets

For more complex cases we may suggest a fixed orthodontic system including wires and brackets, some come with clear or white brackets and wires to ensure they look as discreet at possible.  Quick Straight Teeth, Fast Braces and Six Month Smiles are examples of fixed orthodontic systems.

They are usually used when more tooth movement is required.  Results can usually be seen anywhere between 6-12 months however individual times may vary depending on the amount of tooth movement.

Clear Aligners

As shown in the above cover photo, clear aligners are very discreet and are often recommended when the required amount of tooth movement is fairly small.  Impressions are taken at the start of the treatment and a series of aligners are made to gradually move your teeth into your desired position.

A 'ClinCheck' video is created of your teeth before you accept the treatment to show exactly how your teeth will look and how long it will take to create the finished smile, so you can have every confidence in the treatment prior to starting.

Examples of clear aligner orthodontic systems we work with are Clear Correct and Invisalign.
