SUMMER SMILES – THE BENEFITS OF WINTER COSMETIC DENTAL WORK

Whilst winter may not be the first season that springs to mind when thinking about enhancing your smile with some porcelain veneers or some teeth whitening , here is why planning ahead and embracing winter for your cosmetic dental treatment could work in your favour.

1)     More Time To Plan Treatment – Planning ahead means you have more time and opportunities for detailed conversations with your dentist. You are able to make alterations to the proposed cosmetic dental procedures, you are able to discuss alternatives, you have more time to consider which options are best for you and how you want your results to look.

2)     More Flexibility When Scheduling Appointments – Highly sort after cosmetic dentists are often booked up quite far in advance. By planning you treatment early and avoiding the busy summer months, the dentist will have more availability.

3)     Allows Time For Follow Up Appointments – Follow up appointments are crucial as it gives the dentist the opportunity to make any refinements to ensure optimal results and patient satisfaction. Complications are rare but unfortunately with any procedure there are always risks, follow up appointments also give the dentist the opportunity to detect and treat any complications that arise early before they become more serious.

4)     Recovery Time – The winter months provide more healing time before the summer hustle and bustle of summer activities.

5)     More Time To Plan Finances – Planning ahead gives you time to save money and arrange finance for your upcoming treatment. This means you are not forced to opt for the dentist offering the cheapest service but the one who you feel most confident using and one with proven results.

6)     No Last Minute Rush Before Special Events – We often see patients who are seeking a smile makeover before a special event such as a family wedding, graduation or a big birthday celebration. In reality even a simple treatment like composite bonding or teeth whitening is going to take a couple of months to complete from start to finish.

Considering all your options carefully before undergoing any cosmetic dental treatment gives you the opportunity to set realistic goals and expectations, a better understanding of the benefits and risk associated with those procedures, an understanding of durability and longevity of the treatment, what impact it may have on your oral health and the option to explore alternative treatment options.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments Explained.

Smile Makeover Using Porcelain Veneers –

Porcelain veneers are made from thin ceramic shells and are custom-made in a dental lab. These shells are bonded to the surface of the tooth. They are natural looking and renowned for providing a radiant and flawless smile. They mimic the characteristics of natural teeth due to their ability to reflect natural light. Porcelain veneers are less likely to stain, making them a more durable long-term solution.

Lifespan - 10 years + providing they are well looked after and you maintain good oral hygiene by regularly visiting a dental hygienist.

Time - Porcelain veneers require multiple appointments to complete the treatment. On average it takes 5 appointments and around 10-12 weeks start to finish.

Composite Bonding / Composite Veneers -

Composite veneers are made from a tooth-coloured resin material, This composite filling material is applied directly to the tooths surface and hand-crafted in layers to achieve the desired shade and shape. Composite veneers are a cost-effective option for improving the aesthetics of your teeth. They produce amazing results with very little damage to your teeth however, the aesthetic longevity may not last as well as porcelain veneers and may require regular polishing to maintain their shine as they are more susceptible to staining.

Life Span - 2- 5 years

Time – Composite veneers are usually placed in 1 appointment, However you will require an appointment before the treatment for a trial smile which gives you the options to make any adjustments to the shape, size and shade of the teeth, as well as a review appointment to make any refinements required.

All On Four Dental Implants -

With the ‘All On 4 Dental Implant Technique’, you can replace your missing or damaged teeth with a complete row of fully functioning replacement teeth using just four dental implants. This life-changing procedure gives you a secure and permanent replacement for both upper and lower dentures.

Life Span – 15 years + providing they are well looked after and you maintain good oral hygiene by regularly visiting a dental hygienist.

Time – The four implants and immediate dental bridge are all placed in 1 day you will then be required to wait for 6 months whilst the implant integrates into the bone. The permanent bridge will take 8 weeks to fabricate over 4 appointments.

Teeth Whitening -

Teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to improve the shade of teeth. Tea, coffee, red wine, smoking, and aging will dull your teeth over time. With our at home whitening system, you can erase years’ worth of staining to your teeth in just a couple of weeks.

Lifespan – 2 years depending on diet, if you are smoker and aesthetic preferences.

Time – Minimum 4 weeks.

Orthodontics Using Clear Aligners –

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made clear aligners which are comfortable, removable, and very discreet. They are worn for a minimum of 22 hours a day and only removed when eating, drinking, and brushing your teeth.

Orthodontic treatment has a number of benefits beyond the visible improvement in the smile.

  • Easier to clean

  • Reduces risk of dental decay

  • Reduces risk of gum disease

  • Improve bite issues

  • Improve jaw function

Lifespan – Permanent with regular use of retainers

Time – 12-18 months (Average)

ULTRASONIC SCALING VS EMS AIRFLOW

To maintain optimal oral health daily cleaning and regular visits to a dental hygienist are vital to prevent staining, gum disease and tooth loss. In this blog we delve into the 2 main methods AirFlow and Ultrasonic cleaning to help you make you an informed decision about which method is best for your needs.

Ultrasonic Scaling -

Very effective at removing plaque - Ultrasonic teeth cleaning uses high-frequency vibrations to dislodge plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gum line. The area is also irrigated with water to flush away the debris.

Precise - The ultrasonic scalers have tips which vibrate, allowing for precision even in hard-to-reach areas such as deep pockets. This precision makes it extremely effective in treating advanced gum disease or periodontitis.

Less messy - Ultrasonic cleaners do not involve the use of powders, so they do not generate as much mess as the Airflow method.

Various tip attachments - The ultrasonic scalers have various tip attachments which allow the dental therapist to customise their treatment plan to the patient's individual needs.

AirFlow -

Effective stain removal - Airflow is extremely efficient at removing staining from your teeth. The airflow system uses a fine powder which lifts stains caused by tea, coffee, red wine and smoking leaving teeth looking whiter and brighter.

Gentle - Airflow is less abrasive than Ultrasonic scaling methods, it uses air, warm water and a fine powder to remove stains and plaque from the teeth. It is particularly beneficial to those who suffer from sensitivity and find the Ultrasonic cleaning methods uncomfortable. The gentle nature of the airflow leads to a stress-free more pleasant experience.

Thorough - The airflow system can effectively clean the hard-to-reach areas in the mouth which the ultrasonic scaler may find challenging, reducing the risk of decay and periodontitis.

Ultrasonic scalers have long been the preferred cleaning method in practices due to their precision and effectiveness, They are extremely effective at breaking down stubborn tartar. However, airflow cleaning is gentle and less abrasive and is great for anyone who suffers from dental anxiety or sensitivity and is a breath of fresh air in the dental realm.

There is no one-size-fits-all in dentistry, your dental hygienist may feel you are better suited to one method or a combination of both based on your individual needs. If you would like to know more about the Airflow cleaning system you can contact us -

SUSSEX DENTIST EXPRESSES SADNESS AT NO LONGER TREATING NHS PATIENTS.

A dentist from Sussex has expressed his disappointment at no longer doing NHS work, but says it is no longer feasible to run a business on government funding.

A total of 25 NHS contracts have been handed back across Sussex since 2020.

Patient demand for NHS services in Sussex exceeds the capacity dentists are willing or able to provide, a recent report from NHS Sussex says.

The government said it has invested £3bn each year to deliver dentistry.

NHS Sussex, which is responsible for commissioning NHS dental services, will give an update report to West Sussex County Council later.

The report found areas of deprivation, often with the highest levels of oral health needs, were particularly underserved by dentists.

'IT'S JUST HEARTBREAKING'

Dr Sami Butt, from S3 Dental in Haywards Heath, stopped treating NHS patients in April last year after 20 years.

He said it was a "tough decision" but "the scheme was underfunded and it was a terrible contract".

He claimed: "Over the years dentists have tried to make it work but unfortunately, post pandemic, it's just no longer feasible.

"The cost of living crisis has really hit home for a lot of businesses and with the funding the NHS is providing it's just simply not enough to be able to see patients on the NHS."

He added: "It was so sad because some of these patients have been with us since they were children. I've seen them grow up.

"It's just heartbreaking for a lot of us as clinicians."

In 2022, NHS Sussex was one of the first Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to take in responsibility for commissioning primary, secondary and dental services, alongside community pharmacy and optometry services.

Sami Butt said no longer doing NHS work was "heartbreaking"

But the government manages NHS dental contracts and the funding associated with them.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: "Last year 1.7m more adults and about 800,000 more children saw an NHS dentist compared with the previous year, but there is more to do, and the government is working on a dentistry plan with NHS England to make further improvements.

"We invest more than £3bn each year to deliver NHS dentistry, and we have already introduced reforms designed to incentivise practices to deliver more dental care."

THE DARK SIDE OF DENTAL BEAUTY – TOOTH WHITENING

Tooth whitening remains one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the UK. With the cost of living sky-high, it is understandable why people might be tempted by cheap deals offered by someone who is not a registered dentist in unregulated environments such as beauty salons, shopping centres or even homes. These services may use unlicensed practitioners using up to 300 times the legal limit of bleaching products.

Whilst seeking a brighter, whiter smile, those using these illegal tooth-whitening services are risking various complications such as excruciating pain, swellings, blisters, third-degree burns and a lifetime of tooth sensitivity. Consumers may also face exposure to unregulated products and chemicals, which can put their oral health at risk.

In the UK it is illegal to perform tooth whitening services unless you are a registered dental professional. Dental professionals are qualified to carry out teeth whitening which is both safe and effective. The General Dental Council regulates the procedure to ensure that all practitioners follow strict professional standards.  Beauticians and non-dental practitioners are often unaware that they are breaking the law by offering these services and have been assured that the products are legal by the supplier, which they are not.

It is important to raise awareness of the dangers of illegal tooth whitening by informing individuals of the risks that unlicensed professionals and non-compliant products can pose to their health. This empowers them to make informed decisions when considering teeth whitening.

Legal Teeth Whitening VS Illegal Teeth Whitening

Legal

  • A full dental examination by a GDC-registered dentist must be carried out to ensure the teeth and gums are healthy before any teeth whitening can commence.

  • Individual treatment plan which can be adjusted if required.

  • Bespoke whitening trays which target your teeth and protect your gums.

  • Regulated prescription-only whitening gel that contains up to 6% hydrogen peroxide (16% carbamide peroxide).

  • Aftercare and advice on maintaining a healthy smile.

Illegal

  • No dental examination before treatment.

  • Products containing up to 300 times the legal limit of hydrogen peroxide.

  • Poor fitting generic whitening trays which allow whitening gel to leak onto the gums.

  • Treatment by someone with no dental training.

  • No aftercare.

Opting for teeth whitening by an unregistered non-dental professional is extremely risky. In the short term, you may find initially you save money but long term your oral health is being put in jeopardy. If you are considering teeth whitening opt for a qualified registered dental professional who will be able to provide you with a safe and effective treatment that long term your smile will thank you for.

CONQUERING DENTAL ANXIETY

Many individuals suffer with dental anxiety or a phobia which can prevent them from seeking the oral care they require. In this blog post, we'll explore tips and strategies which can help you overcome your dental anxiety.

1. Choose The Right Dentist - Find a dentist who is experienced in treating anxious patients and will adopt a gentle approach. They will understand the importance of starting small and come up with a treatment plan where they begin with less invasive procedures, such as hygiene appointments to help gain your trust and confidence in the dental environment.

2. Don’t Be Afraid To Communicate Your Fears - By openly discussing your fears and concerns, The dentist will be able to understand where your anxiety comes from, is it fear of pain? A past experience? Or a general dental fear? By identifying the root cause, the dentist can work with you to create a unique treatment plan to help feel as calm and relaxed as possible during your dental visits.

3. Ask Questions About The Procedure - Dental phobias usually stem from the fear of the unknown. Understanding the procedure makes it less intimidating and eliminates the element of surprises

4. Bring A Buddy - Having a friend or family member that you trust, attend the surgery with you can provide emotional support and comfort.

5. Relaxation Techniques - Breathing and mindfulness exercises before and during your appointment can help calm your nerves and promote a more relaxed state of mind.

8. Consider Sedation - If you are extremely anxious you may wish to explore sedation options with your dentist. Conscious sedatives can help you relax and may be an option for more extensive procedures.

9. Entertainment Distraction - Listening to your favourite music or an audiobook during the procedure can distract you from the dental procedure by distracting your mind and shifting your attention.

Overcoming dental anxiety is a gradual process. Remember each successful dental visit is a victory. Take small steps and be patient with yourself. By incorporating these tips, you can hopefully work towards a more positive and comfortable experience when visiting the dentist.

WHY DENTISTS RECOMMEND ORTHODONTICS BEFORE COSMETIC TREATMENTS

When it comes to improving your smile, there are a variety of treatments available, from teeth straightening to cosmetic treatments such as veneers or teeth whitening. However many dentists recommend orthodontic treatment to correct the bite and teeth alignment first before any cosmetic enhancements.

Here’s why -
1. Improves Gum Health - Your gums are the foundations that hold your teeth in place. Misaligned teeth are harder to clean, which means an increased chance of gum disease. Healthy gums mean less chance of dental decay and tooth loss.

2. Improves Overall Aesthetics - Teeth straightening improves the alignment and positioning of the teeth within the mouth. When teeth are correctly aligned, it produces better and more natural-looking results after cosmetic procedures like veneers or teeth whitening.

3. Long-Term Results - Malocclusions aka a bad bite can cause an uneven and excessive amount of pressure on certain teeth during biting and chewing. This can lead to accelerated tooth wear, chipping, and cracking.

4. Orthodontics Is Minimally Invasive - Orthodontics is not considered invasive in the same way that some cosmetic procedures such as veneers are. Orthodontic treatment involves the use of clear aligners to gradually move teeth into place.

5. Cost-Effective Approach - Opting for teeth straightening as the first step in your smile makeover can be a cost-effective approach. Correcting the alignment issues first can reduce the amount of cosmetic work that is needed.

Orthodontics plays an important part in achieving a beautiful and healthy smile. Teeth straightening sets the stage for improved oral health and aesthetic outcomes. By addressing any alignment issues and ensuring tooth health and stability, you not only minimize the extent of cosmetic procedures required but also enhance the longevity. If you are considering a smile makeover we strongly recommend you consider starting with orthodontics – it's the path to a smile that's as beautiful as it is healthy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY GUMS

A smile is incredibly powerful, it has the ability to influence relationships and has a huge impact on both your mental and physical health. Therefore it is important to keep your mouth healthy and radiant. While we usually focus on the health of our teeth, we must also remember to care for the foundation that supports them – our gums.

Gum disease or periodontal disease as it is also known, is a condition that affects the gums and the tooth’s supporting structures. It develops when plaque accumulates on the teeth due to poor brushing techniques and a lack of interdental cleaning.

The two stages of gum disease -

1. Gingivitis: The early stage of gum disease.  The symptoms include inflamed, red, swollen gums and bleeding when brushing or flossing your teeth. With good oral health and regular dental cleans with a hygienist, gingivitis can be reversed.

2. Periodontitis: When gingivitis is left untreated, it leads to periodontitis. The toxins from the build up of calculus trigger the body's immune response and pockets develop around the teeth where the gums peel away. When left untreated the pockets get larger and the infection spreads to the bone. This damage to the bone and supporting structures leads to tooth loss and potentially damages the jawbone.

Risk Factors

Poor Oral Hygiene - The build up of plaque and tartar on your teeth and gums causes irritation to the gum tissues. This irritation causes redness, swelling and often bleeding when brushing.

Pregnancy - Hormonal changes in the body can exaggerate the gum’s response to plaque and tartar. Pregnancy gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease which is easily treated with good oral hygiene, regular flossing and visiting the hygienist.

Smoking - The chemicals in cigarettes irritate the gums and make them more susceptible to the bacteria that cause Gingivitis.

Compromised Immune System - When the body’s immune system is compromised it makes it harder to fight the bacteria in the mouth which can lead to gum disease.

Diabetes - Due to an impaired ability to fight off infections, people with diabetes are often more susceptible to gum disease.

During your hygiene appointment, you will have any plaque/tartar removed, your teeth polished and stains removed, our hygienist will educate you on the most effective cleaning techniques and interdental cleaning.

We recommend visiting the hygienist every 6 months to keep your teeth and gums in tip-top condition.

THE SMILE MAKEOVER; COMPOSITE VENEERS VS. PORCELAIN VENEERS

A beautiful smile can work wonders for boosting your self-confidence and leaving a lasting impression on those you meet. Dental veneers offer a popular and effective solution for those seeking a smile makeover and can be made in a composite or porcelain material to cater for different needs and preferences.

1. Materials

Composite Veneers:

Composite veneers are made from a tooth-coloured resin material, This composite filling material is applied directly to the tooth surface and hand-crafted in layers to achieve the desired shade and shape.

Porcelain Veneers:

Porcelain veneers are made from thin ceramic shells and are custom-made in a dental lab. These shells are bonded to the surface of the tooth.

2. Aesthetics

Composite Veneers:

Composite veneers are a cost-effective option for improving the aesthetics of your teeth. They produce amazing results with very little damage to your teeth however, the aesthetic longevity may not last as well as porcelain veneers and may require regular polishing to maintain their shine as they are more susceptible to staining.

Porcelain Veneers:

Porcelain veneers are natural looking and renowned for providing a radiant and flawless smile. They mimic the characteristics of natural teeth due to their ability to reflect natural light. Porcelain veneers are less likely to stain, making them a more durable long-term solution.

3. Durability and Longevity:

Composite Veneers:

Composite material is not as durable as porcelain which means they may require replacements or repair more frequently. We would recommend replacing composite veneers every 2 - 5 years.

Porcelain Veneers:

Porcelain veneers are extremely durable. They can last 10 years + providing they are well looked after and you maintain good oral hygiene by regularly visiting a dental hygienist.

4. Time

Composite Veneers:

Composite veneers are usually placed in 1 appointment. The dentist hand sculpts the composite veneers directly onto the teeth in layers and cures them with a UV light. The dentist will then make any necessary adjustments and polish the composite.

Porcelain Veneers:

Before Porcelain veneers can be placed, the teeth will need to be prepared and a digital impression taken to send to the dental laboratory. You will be fitted with some temporary veneers while the dental lab prepares your custom-made veneers. This means multiple visits to the surgery.

Due to preparation methods composite veneers are considered less destructive to the tooth surface than porcelain. Composite veneers require very little preparation for the tooth meaning the tooth’s natural structure is preserved as there is very little need for enamel removal. If required they can be removed with very little damage to the tooth. Porcelain veneers however do require some reduction of enamel to accommodate the veneer, and so are therefore irreversible.

All On Four Dental Implant Bridge - A New Smile In Just One Day

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implant surgery is a restorative procedure that replaces missing tooth roots with a titanium post. The artificial root integrates into the jaw bone and provides anchorage for the dental crown or dental bridge. Dental implants replace damaged or missing teeth and are a welcomed alternative to dentures or dental bridges.

What Is The All On Four Technique?

With the ‘All On 4 Dental Implant Technique’, you can replace your missing or damaged teeth with a complete row of fully functioning replacement teeth using just four dental implants. This life-changing procedure gives you a secure and permanent replacement for both upper and lower dentures.

What Are The Benefits Of All On 4 Dental Implants?

  1. Restores oral functionality – The all-on-four dental implant technique replaces all your missing teeth, which means your oral cavity is fully functional again.

  2. Aesthetics – All on four dental implants drastically improve your smile by closing existing gaps from tooth loss, and restoring facial fullness, leaving you with a more youthful appearance.

  3. Immediate results- With all on four dental implants you will have a full arch of missing or damaged teeth replaced in one appointment meaning you leave our dental practice with a fully functioning, beautiful smile.

  4. Easier to eat and chew - With the all-on-four dental implant solution, you will be able to eat your favourite foods wherever and whenever you want.

  5. Eliminate health issues caused by missing or failing teeth - This revolutionary system helps reduce the risk of periodontal disease which has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, strokes and heart disease.

  6. Easy to care for – Your all-on-four dental bridge is screwed into the implants and is only removed by your dentist at your dental check-up. Therefore you should care for them the same as your natural teeth, brush daily, floss if required as well as regularly visit the hygienist and dentist.

What Is The Treatment Process?

Appointment 1 –

Before the implant surgery, you will be required to have a cosmetic consultation with one of our dentists. During this consultation, you will have a full dental examination, including radiographs and a 3d scan using our intra-oral camera. This examination will gather all the necessary information required to plan your treatment.

Appointment 2 –

This appointment will be with the Implantologist who will do any necessary extractions and place the implants. The temporary prosthetic will be attached to the implants and you will leave with a beautiful new smile. This treatment is done under local anaesthetic. Sedation is available if required.

Before treatment & Immediately after treatment

Appointment 3 –

The dentist will see you a fortnight after your treatment to make sure everything is healing as it should.

Providing that the dentist is happy with how you are healing, you will not be required to attend the surgery for 6 months while the implants integrated into the bone. After 6 months we will start the process of making you a permanent bridge to place on the implants.

Before treatment & After Final Bridge placement

What is the healing process?

Immediately after the treatment, the area is likely to be swollen and you may have some bruising. The area may be a bit tender and painkillers will be required for at least the first 24 hours. The patient will be recommended to have a soft food diet for the first few weeks and good oral hygiene is essential to keep everything clean and avoid infections.

S3 Dental offers both restorative and cosmetic dentistry as well as facial aesthetic treatments. We are situated in Eltham Greenwich, Haywards Heath Mid Sussex and Hinchley Wood Surrey.

Tips For Reducing Dental Decay

Dental decay is the destruction of the tooth surfaces due to prolonged exposure to acidic substances. It is typically caused by the build-up of plaque on the hard tissues of the teeth. The bacteria feed on the sugars in the mouth and as a result, releases an acidic by-product which can erode the enamel and lead to cavities. Treatment for dental decay includes fillings, root canals and crowns.

Dental decay is a preventable disease that can be avoided by taking these simple steps -

1. Brush at least twice a day: Brushing once in the morning and again before bed is essential to prevent tooth decay. Brushing your teeth helps to remove plaque a sticky film of bacteria that accumulates on teeth. Plaque produces acids that eat away at the enamel layer of the teeth which leads to decay and other dental issues.

2. Attend regular dental examinations: Regular dental check-ups are important to prevent and detect dental decay early. We recommend visiting the dental surgeon for a consultation every 6 months.

3. Invest in an electric toothbrush: Electric toothbrushes are much more effective than manual toothbrushes at removing plaque. This is because of their oscillating motion, which helps to clean the teeth more thoroughly.

4. Floss Daily: Flossing is essential for removing plaque and food particles that get trapped between your teeth and below the gum line.

5. Regularly visit the hygienist: Visiting the dental hygienist regularly for a dental cleaning will help prevent dental decay by removing any plaque build-up. The build-up of plaque can lead to cavities and tooth decay. The hygienist will also provide advice on tooth brushing and flossing as well as dietary advice to help prevent dental decay.

6. Eat a Balanced Diet: Eating a balanced diet with low sugar, high vegetables, whole grains and dairy can help reduce dental decay. We recommend limiting snacking and keeping all sugary foods and drinks to meal times.

Snacks we recommend - Nuts and seeds, carrot sticks and hummus, plain yoghurt, cheese, breadsticks, celery and peanut butter, hard-boiled eggs, and toast with butter. We also recommend opting for water over juices and fizzy drinks.

Snacks we would advise you avoid- dried fruit, cereal bars, fruit roll-ups, smoothies, cakes/cake bars

7. Use fluoride toothpaste - Fluoride toothpaste strengthens the surface of the teeth, this makes the enamel more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. It also helps to remineralise areas of the enamel that have been weakened by these acids. This can reverse early signs of decay and prevent further erosion.

8. Straightening your teeth - Teeth straightening makes brushing and flossing easier. When teeth are properly aligned, it is easier to reach all the areas of the mouth. This helps to remove the plaque build-up and food particles which lead to decay.

We would always recommend treating dental decay as soon as possible, Decay will get worse if left untreated, which will require more extensive and expensive treatment, small cavities can quickly spread and become larger if left untreated. Tooth decay often leads to pain and discomfort and causes difficulty eating. If left untreated decay can lead to more serious problems like tooth infections, gum disease, and even tooth loss.

If you have any concerns about your dental health you can book an examination with one of our dental surgeries. During this exam, they will assess the overall health of your teeth and gums and make recommendations for any necessary treatment.

Wearing a night guard whilst you sleep is beneficial for people who grind their teeth or clench their jaw. It can help to prevent further damage to the teeth and also reduce pain in the jaw.

Benefits of wearing a night guard.

1. Prevents grinding your teeth- Wearing a night guard can help to prevent grinding your teeth. This can wear down the enamel on your teeth, which causes sensitivity and other oral health issues. If your teeth become very worn down, your dentist is likely to need a perform a treatment called composite bonding. Composite bonding uses a white filling material to build up the tooth in areas that have become worn down. The final result is natural-looking and functional teeth.

2. Prevents jaw pain -  When you are stressed, it is very common to clench your teeth and jaw as natural reaction to the tension and anxiety you are feeling . Wearing a night guard can help to prevent jaw pain caused by clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth whilst you are asleep.

3. Reduces headaches - Suffering from frequent headaches? Wearing a night guard can reduce the intensity and frequency of these headaches.

4. Improves sleep - By wearing a night guard you can help to improve your sleep quality by reducing jaw clenching and teeth grinding.

5. Saves you money - By wearing a dental night guard you can save money on costly dental procedures by protecting your teeth from damage due to grinding.

Custom-made vs Over-the-counter night guards.

Custom-made night guards are more comfortable than over-the-counter ones, which can often be bulky. Custom- made night guards also provide better protection against grinding and clenching of the jaw as they are designed specifically to the shape and bite of your mouth. They are also more durable and long-lasting than over-the-counter/online night guards.

Everything You Need To Know About Dental Implants

A dental implant is used to replace missing teeth. It is an artificial root made from titanium or zirconia that is surgically implanted into the jawbone. The implant is then used to support a dental crown, bridge, or even denture. Dental implants provide a natural-looking and long-lasting solution to missing teeth. They also help to preserve bone structure and improve the stability and strength of the jawbone.

Benifits of Dental implants.

1. Long-lasting: With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

2. Natural looking: dental implants look and feel just like your natural teeth.

3. Improved speech: When you have missing teeth, you may find speaking clearly difficult. By replacing those gaps with a dental implant your speech will improve.

4. Comfortable : Dental implants are significantly more comfortable and discreet than removable dentures.

5. Easier to eat with: Dental implants function just like your natural teeth, allowing you to eat all of your favourite foods easily.

6. Improved self-esteem: Dental implants can give you back your smile and help improve your self-esteem and self-confidence.

7. Better for overall oral health: Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant as they would be for a dental bridge more of your natural teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health.

What appointments are required?

1. Dental Implant Consultation: A consultation with one of our Dentists will provide a comprehensive evaluation of your oral health and overall goals. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of dental implants and discuss alternative treatment options. They may recommend a CT scan to check suitability for the treatment.

2. Implant Placement: After your consultation, we will create your treatment plan and book you an appointment with our Implantologist for the implant placement. During this procedure, the implant will be surgically placed into the jawbone. The procedure will be done under local anaesthetic and take approximately 1 hour.

3. Review. At your two-week implant review appointment, your dentist will review your implant to make sure it is healing correctly.

4. 3D Scan: Approximately 6 months after the implant is placed your dentist will take a 3d scan of your mouth using our revolutionary Trios intra-oral scanner, which will be sent to the laboratory who will start designing the implant crown.

4. Placement of Implant Crown: At this appointment the dentist will place your custom-made crown on the implant. This crown is designed to look, feel, and function like a natural tooth.

Aftercare of a dental implant.

Regular dental check-ups and dental hygiene appointments are important for the long-term success of the implant. The hygienist will check for signs of inflammation and infection, as well as clean the gums to maintain optimal oral health.

Dental Bone grafts.

A bone graft is a synthetic bone material which is used to add volume and density to areas in the jaw where bone loss has occurred. Bone grafting is not always essential when placing dental implants, but it can help to significantly improve the patient's chances of positive treatment outcomes.

Single unit implants.

A single unit implant is a dental implant used to replace a missing tooth. These implants are used to replace a missing tooth without the need to alter the adjacent teeth.

Multiple tooth implants .

Multiple tooth implants involve the placement of dental implants into the jawbone and a dental bridge is secured on top. The implants act like anchors to support the dental bridge.

All on Four Dental Implant Solution.

All-on-four dental implants is an implant-supported prosthetic that replaces the entire arch with a permanent bridge using only four dental implants. This type of treatment is ideal for anyone who has bone loss, as the procedure requires less bone grafting than traditional dental implants and can be completed in just one day.

Cost.

Implants start from £2750. We offer a range of finance options to help spread the cost of treatments into smaller monthly payments.

What other options do we do at S3 Dental?

As well as restorative treatments such as dental implants and cerec crowns, we also offer a range of cosmetic treatments which will help you to achieve the smile of your dreams. Teeth straightening can correct crooked or misaligned teeth, while teeth whitening will brighten and lighten your smile. Composite veneers will give you a brighter more natural-looking smile and our smile makeover treatments can transform your entire smile completely.

ABC TREATMENT - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Q- What is the ‘ABC’ Treatment-

ABC stands for Align, (Teeth Straightening) Bleach (Teeth Whitening) and Contour (Composite Bonding/Composite Contouring)

Align

The first stage of this treatment is the alignment of the teeth. We tend to opt for clear aligner systems such as ClearCorrect. These near-on invisible aligners are worn for 22 hours a day, only to be removed for eating and drinking. Each set of aligners is worn for 2 weeks before moving to the next aligner. On average teeth straightening takes between 9-12 months however some case make take longer depending on the severity.

Bleach

Once the teeth are nicely aligned your dentist will take a 3d scan of your mouth using our state-of-the-art intra-oral scanner. Using this scan our lab will then make your custom-made whitening trays. The whitening gel is placed in these trays and worn either overnight or for an hour during the day. We recommend whitening teeth for 2 weeks, however if you wish for a more dramatic result you may need to continue the whitening process for a little longer.

Contour

Once you are happy with the shade of your teeth it’s time to move on to the bonding part of the treatment. Composite is a highly versatile material and it can be placed directly by your dentist onto the tooth’s surface. It can be used to close gaps, fix chipped teeth, lighten the colour and even change the shape and size of the teeth.

Q- How much does the ABC treatment cost?

Unfortunately without seeing one of our dentists for a consultation, it is not possible to give an exact estimate as prices vary depending on the treatment required, Teeth Straightening starts from £3750 (including Teeth Whitening) and Composite Bonding starts from £200 per tooth.

Q: How long does the treatment take?

Every case is different so the length of treatment does vary. The average Teeth Straightening case takes roughly 9-12 months, Teeth Whitening takes 2 weeks and Composite Bonding can be done in as little as 2 appointments.

Q: What are the benefits of ABC treatment?

  • Due to the minimally invasive nature of the ABC treatment, it is a low-risk and high-reward option for patients seeking a smile makeover.

  • As part of the treatment, improvements in the bite and positioning of teeth are made which then reduces the risk of future problems.

  • Minimally invasive treatments require little to no anaesthetic which is great for patients who are anxious about having dental treatment.

  • For many patients, the ABC treatment will improve self-confidence and give a more youthful appearance.

The Align, Bleach and Contour treatment is one of the most popular treatments to improve the appearance and health of the teeth. It is a safe and effective way to improve the aesthetics of the teeth and can be customised to meet the needs of each individual patient.

Top Cosmetic Dental Treatments 2023

The start of a new year is often a time when we take stock of our lives, we often look for changes we can make to help us feel better about ourselves. This may be to drink less alcohol or join a gym or for some, it may be to treat themselves to a new smile so they can feel more attractive and confident. Over the last 12 months, we have seen a huge rise in minimally invasive treatments but which treatments do we think will be most popular in 2023?

Composite Bonding

Also known as composite contouring or composite veneers.

Composite bonding allows for fantastic improvements in smiles by the skillful and clever addition of white filling material to teeth. This allows for the change in shape and size of teeth. Usually paired with teeth whitening for best results.

Composite bonding is perfect for -

  • Repairing chipped teeth.

  • Discoloured teeth.

  • Straighten crooked teeth.

  • Finishing touches after orthodontic treatment.

ClearCorrect Teeth Straightening

ClearCorrect is a series of custom-made clear aligners which are comfortable, removable, and very discreet. They are worn for a minimum of 22 hours a day and only removed when eating, drinking, and brushing your teeth.

Orthodontic treatment has a number of benefits beyond the visible improvement in the smile.

  • Easier to clean

  • Reduces risk of dental decay

  • Reduces risk of gum disease

  • Improve bite issues

  • Improve jaw function

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to improve the shade of teeth.

Tea, coffee, red wine, smoking, and aging will dull your teeth over time. With the Boutique Whitening system, you can erase years’ worth of staining to your teeth in just a couple of weeks.

How it works -

We make custom-made whitening trays, whitening gel is placed into the whitening trays and worn for either 1 hour or 4 hours (depending on the prescription) every day for 2 weeks. Over the 2 weeks, your teeth will gradually lighten, improving the shade of the teeth.

Prior to any whitening treatment, you must make sure you are dentally fit. Whitening should only ever be performed on patients with healthy teeth and gums. Whitening an unhealthy mouth can cause pain, sensitivity, and discomfort.

Unfortunately, the whitening gel is unable to change the shade of dental crowns, veneers (including composite veneers), and any composite fillings. If you are considering any cosmetic dental treatment or smile makeovers we always suggest any planned whitening treatment is carried out beforehand.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone and a cosmetic implant crown is screwed into that implant.

Dental Implants are regarded as the next best thing to your natural tooth. If looked after properly can last 30 years+.

Benefits of dental implants -

  • Prevents bone loss

  • Replaces missing gaps

  • Restores face structure

  • Enables speech

  • A permanent solution to missing teeth

Why Can't I Get An NHS Dentist Anymore?

For patients currently experiencing problems getting NHS appointments, you may be considering your options and even considering dental appointments privately, but might have reservations about going Private, not knowing what to expect, what the difference is and perhaps why you should pay more for Private Dentistry.

There are a number of reasons as to why this has happened and the country is facing an unprecedented NHS dentistry crisis.

As the practice owner of S3 Dental, the practice has for many years offered NHS care and we offered predominently NHS examinations to the majority of our patients, even if some opted for private treatment options.

The problem currently facing the country and importantly our patients is that there simply aren’t dentists willing to work on the NHS whilst the current NHS dental contract exists.

In recent times, some patients have accused dentists of being “greedy” and “only about the money”, but the matter is a little more complicated than that. Dentistry is a job and career and as such, anyone who works will surely expect to be paid for it. If we posed the question to anyone - if you asked any business owner, if they would like to be successful, it would start with a yes and the idea of success would atleast entail the business being profitable. The objection some people may have is to “how much profit” is being made.

So perhaps it is time to shed a little light on the current dental contract and explain how things have ended up as they have and why after so many years of providing NHS dental care, are dentists now refusing to provide it?

The NHS Dental contract that currently exists was imposed on dentists in 2006. It was not agreed or discussed and almost overnight was given to the profession as the new way of working. Prior to 2006, it was a little simpler, where dentists were paid for each item of service they provided and a very simple fee per item. Regardless of any reservations patients may have over unnecessary treatment, the premises was simple. However in 2006, the new contract may sweeping changes, and in an attempt by the government to control spending on NHS dentistry, it introduced the UDA - Unit of Dental Activity and a set of 4 bands for patients to pay.

Band 1 - covering examinations providing 1 UDA

Band 2 - For all fillings, root canal treatments and extractions and denture additions and included anything in a band 1, providing 3 UDAs

Band 3 - For advanced treatments involving laboratory work such as crowns and dentures and included Band 1 and 2 treatments, providing 12 UDAs

Urgent Band - For emergency treatment to secure and maintain oral health providing 1.2UDAs

The fee paid by patients for each band was fixed by the government and since 2006 the amount for each band has increased.

It is now important to clarify that the payment dentists and dental practices receive is not actually what the patients pays for their treatment.

Dental practices were given a UDA target and a negotiated amount for each UDA they performed. Therefore this meant that each dental practice in the country had a different contract to the other, and two neighbouring practices were paid different amounts for the same work. i.e a dentist working on the NHS in Bexleyheath may be paid a different amount than a dentist in Eltham. For reference, the average amount per UDA since 2006 is £20 per UDA.

So, just like employees may be paid different wages per hour, so were dentists. However, this was only the start of the problem.

As I explained, dentists are not paid for each treatment they provide, but rather for the highest band the treatment the patient needs falls in. So if a patient needs a filling, this is a Band 2 and the dentist is paid 3 UDAs. Therefore a dentist and the dental practice is paid on average £60 for the Band 2 treatment provided. If a patient required 1 or 5 fillings, then the dentist is still paid for the Band 2 treatment. Therefore regardless of the amount of treatment required, the number of appointments or the complexity of each filling, the dentist and dental practice is paid the same amount. I hope that the general public can start to appreciate that this does not seem fair.

To run a dental practice, you need to have a building which is stocked and equipped with expensive equipment that is required to be serviced and maintained regularly, you need to pay energy bills as well as employ staff such as nurses, receptionists and managers to comply with all regulations and requirement to be able to work. Dentists are required by law to have legal cover in place to ensure patients are protected in case of malpractice claims and our regulator the GDC takes one of the highest amounts in europe for dentists to stay on the register each year.

Very simply for any business to stay viable it needs to generate a profit, and if the cost of each treatment being provided is unknown, the likelihood of remaining viable is very low. The way dental practices remained viable was by providing private dental care to supplement the NHS income that was being provided.

These days, we are all acutely aware of the cost of living and inflation, but the most damning thing with the governments’ approach to NHS dentistry is that the amount of money the government pays to dental practices for NHS dentistry has not risen in line with inflation, so often year on year the increases in the pay towards NHS dentistry is below inflation - which is essentially a pay cut. Therefore as minimum wage increases, and other people’s pay has increased in different sectors, dentists are being paid less today than when they started in 2006. Further to this, the amount patients pay for dental treatment has increased, but this has only been to offset the amount the government withdraws from NHS dentistry. Infact the government only funds NHS dentistry for 50% of the population, which means there is an expectation by the government that not everyone should receive NHS care, and an understanding that not everyone is going to get NHS dental even if they wanted it. Therefore patients have continued to pay a steatlh tax over the years.

So reflecting on the fact that dentist earnings on the NHS are less OR at best their earnings in 2006, it becomes a problem for dentists who as they get older, have weddings, families, mortgages and other life expenses to deal with, in today’s financial climate you can see why the NHS dental service remains an unattractive prospect. Historically, as dentists got older and moved into a stage in their life where they needed and wanted to earn more for their family development and left or reduced their NHS commitment, a younger batch of dentists would often take up this role as their started their careers. With fewer financial dependents and responsibilities, it was easier for younger dentists to work on lower pay as they developed their skills and gained experience.

The problem is that newer dentists do not want to work on the NHS and furthermore they find it incredibly difficult to work on the NHS. They cannot afford to live in 2022 and get paid 2006 amounts. In addition, the training they receive at an undergraduate level is not at the levels it once was with many dentists barely performing any dental procedures at univeristy, yet are expected to provide dental treatment at high skill and speed for low cost. They just do not have the ability to safely perform this treatment and meet the requirements the government sets for each practice to meet their UDA target. So currently young dentists are now looking for opportunities to work in nurturing environments without targets and pressures and private dental practice is one of the main avenues where dentists can nurture their skills whilst being mentored by an experienced clinician without fear of litigation and not earning a living.

From a patient’s perspective, most patients want an experienced dentist who is skilled and confident and has performed the treatments lots of times, whilst in reality, if they knew that the dentist was inexperienced, hadn’t performed this treatment previously or only a handful of times, they would be very concerned. This is equally very stressful for young dentists because the risk and stress that goes with treatment and the fear of litigation makes it difficult to justify doing it in the first place, at what is cheapest price in the western world and Europe.

So if we come back to the original question - Why can’t I get an NHS Dentist?

Well, the answer should be a little clearer, the NHS system does not pay enough to dentists for the work required, but that is just the financial aspect of being the dentist performing the treatment. The second issue is how can a business operate as an NHS practice?

There are no government-owned dental practices in England, each dental practice is independently owned and run by private owners who have a contract to provide these units of dental activity for a fixed amount. So every expense from employing staff to the materials, and equipment is on paid for by the business. The business subsequently has to pay all costs, bills and dentists for the work they provide, so in today’s current financial climate, how can a business stay viable and pay for employees if their own income is limited by what the government provides? A solely NHS practice would not be viable.

Dental practices have to compete to hire employees such as nurses and receptionists and if they do not pay enough to compete with other jobs then they simply will not have the staff to open. These last few years, many dental practices have struggled to find experienced staff to provide assistant clinical care because many nurses and receptionists have left to work in less stressful environments whilst getting paid significantly more.

Again, to put this into context minimum wage in 2006 was £5.35, how could anyone afford to live working on that wage without considering other avenues of income?

So now we come full circle and consider why Private dentistry is so important to dentists and practice owners, because it essentially has sustained dental practices since 2006. So far, I hope you can appreciate that I have barely touched on the actual clinical differences between NHS and Private dentistry. Now I must at this point also highlight that the NHS dental contract that dentists have to comply with says that there should be no difference in the quality of dental care provided on the NHS or Privately. So for patients thinking a little deeper into this, how can a dentist and dental practice afford to offer you the best thing available if they are getting paid the lowest amount for it? How sustainable is it? - well you may have guessed it - Not very!

So for each dentist who wants to work on the NHS, they now need to overcome the NHS rules if they wish to provide NHS dental care and supplement this with Private dentistry to earn a living, and unfortunately, it just is not possible. So dentists have left the NHS services in droves nationally because they cannot do it. They cannot work with restrictive covenants that essentially, mean they work for free or work at a loss. The physical demand and the mental strain of providing intense and highly skilled work is too much on the NHS.

The technological landscape today is very different from 2006. In 2006 when the dental contract was conceived we would still need to wait another 18 months for the first iPhone to arrive and the technological leaps have meant that dentistry can be provided in new ways, ways that many dentists would like to perform and equipment they would like to invest in. At S3 Dental we have invested heavily in dental equipment that makes dentistry modern and of the 21st century, but the current dental contract which has barely changed since 2006 continues to not adapt to the modern world and unfortunately is a testament to the state of the NHS and the governments which have overseen the decline of the NHS and this country.

So, what is in stock for the future of NHS dentistry? - well the government has promised dental contract reform for over 12 years with little real action. Dentists are fed up with the broken promises and patients are unhappy with the lack of NHS dentistry available. At S3 Dental, we have attempted to recruit dentists for NHS service provision, but unfortunately, we have failed, and the time comes when as patients accept and need dental care that the only option is Private dental care options.

As such, S3 Dental cannot offer NHS dental care for much longer, and it is highly likely that in April 2023 we will not meet the NHS targets required for us to remain an NHS practice. So for S3 Dental patients who are seeking NHS dental care, unfortunately, we just do not have the dentists OR the ability to provide NHS dental services and our only avenue for patients is private dental care.

What to expect at your dental check-up appointment

Routine dental visits are essential if you wish to keep your mouth healthy. By detecting problems early treatment is likely to be simpler, more effective and less costly.

Medical history

At the start of your check-up, your dentist will ask you about your medical history. Your dentist must be aware of any medications or medical conditions to prevent complications during treatment.

Discuss concerns

You will be given the opportunity to discuss any concerns you have about your teeth, whether it is a restorative issue or something that is causing you pain/discomfort. This is a good time to bring up any cosmetic procedures you may be interested in such as teeth whitening, composite bonding (composite veneers) or orthodontic treatment (teeth straightening).

Examine your teeth, gums and jaw.

The dentist will check your teeth for any signs of dental decay and your gums for any indications of gum disease such as swelling, redness, or sores. They will perform a basic periodontal examination or BPE for short. A BPE is a way to assess a patient’s periodontal status. It will advise the dentist if you need to be referred to a dental hygienist. The dentist will then check your jaw bone, bite and check for signs of jaw clenching.

Checking for cancers

Your dentist will then check for any signs of mouth and throat cancer such as sores/ulcers, lesions, unexplained bleeding, and blocked salivary glands.

Scan

At new examinations, we will scan your mouth with our 3d scanner. By taking a series of photos of the teeth this very clever camera allows the dentist to build a 3d image of your teeth on the computer. That 3d analysis enables the dentist to see how patients bite and chew and where they put pressure on their teeth. That model is stored on the computer and allows the dentist to make any dental appliances which may be required in the near future such as teeth whitening trays and clear aligners.

Ai technology with our specialist software allows past and future scans to be compared to determine if patients teeth are changing, moving or wearing down. Timely intervention can mean that small problems never become big problems.

Radiographs

Radiographs detect problems such as dental decay which is not visible to the naked eye. They will also show other issues like root problems or infections. Early detection of such issues is vital for effective treatment.

Treatment Planning
At the end of your examination, the dentist will share their findings with you and any potential restorative or cosmetic dental treatment will be discussed in full.

Regular dental care is important to keep both your teeth and gums healthy. However regular check-ups aren’t just to safeguard your oral health, they may also flag up issues elsewhere in the body such as diabetes, digestive problems and heart issues.

We are currently registering new private patients in all 3 of our surgeries. If you would like more information contact -

Over-The-Counter Teeth Whitening Vs Professional Teeth Whitening

There are hundreds of over-the-counter teeth whitening products out there, you may have already tried a few and may have even had some success, however, professional teeth whitening systems are the safest and most effective option when it comes to whitening your teeth.

Before proceeding with any whitening treatment you must make sure you are dentally fit to do so. Whitening should only be carried out on patients who have healthy teeth and gums and never on patients with dental decay or gum disease. Whitening an unhealthy mouth can cause pain, discomfort, sensitivity and potentially damage your teeth or gums.

Over the counter/online teeth whitening products can only legally contain 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. Professional whitening kits contain up to 16% making them much more effective than any that are brought over-the-counter.

Over the counter teeth whitening products are cheaper than professional teeth whitening in the short term, however the results from professional whitening will last much longer, the leftover gel can be kept in the fridge until it expires and used for top-up sessions in the future years. Extra tubes of gel can be purchased from our surgery for just £50. Long-term professional whitening may actually work out more cost-effective.

Professional teeth whitening trays are custom-made, they are comfortable, sleek and of good quality. Over-the-counter trays are bulky, and often uncomfortable. Due to the poor fit, they are likely to cause the teeth whitening solution to leak out over the top of the trays and irritate the gums.

One thing to be aware of when whitening your teeth is that unfortunately whitening gel is unable to change the shade of dental crowns, veneers (including composite veneers) and any composite fillings. If you are considering any cosmetic dental treatments or smile makeovers we always suggest any planned whitening treatment is carried out beforehand.

When it comes to whitening your teeth we always recommend leaving it to the professionals, over-the-counter products are not as safe or as effective and when it comes to your teeth, the investment is worth it.

Missing Teeth?

Beautiful natural-looking teeth help us to look our best, boost our self-confidence as well as help us to enjoy those foods that we love.

Missing or broken teeth have a considerable impact on day-to-day life and can affect both your personal and social life.
Nutrition -

Missing teeth could mean you are unable to eat certain foods, this can lead to a lack of essential vitamins and minerals. You may find biting and chewing your favourite foods difficult or painful.

Quality of life -

Missing teeth may affect your speech, as well as your appearance. Many people with missing teeth say they feel self-conscious when laughing and smiling and often cover their mouth with their hands when they do so, this could leave you feeling unhappy and anxious about your appearance.

Eating Out -

For some of those struggling with eating due to missing teeth, dining out in pubs and restaurants is a no-no. This means missing out on socialising with family, friends and loved ones.

Bone Loss -

The most severe effect of missing teeth is bone loss. The surrounding teeth may shift into the area of the missing teeth causing changes to your jaw structure, the position of your teeth (teeth straightness) and eventually bone loss.

Luckily S3 Dental has a team of highly skilled dental surgeons and a variety of treatment options to help restore or replace missing teeth.

Dental Crowns or Bridges -

Dental crowns and bridges are designed to look and feel just like your natural teeth. Broken teeth can be prepared so that a dental crown or bridge is placed on top, they can also be placed on top of dental implants.

Veneers and Composite Veneers -

Veneers are a tooth-coloured porcelain shell which is placed directly onto the front surface of the tooth. Composite veneers are usually applied in thin layers by hand by your dentist. They are an excellent alternative to porcelain veneers. The main difference between the two materials is their strength. Porcelain is much stronger than composite and will therefore last longer however composite veneers are reversible due to the minimally invasive technique used.

Dental Implants -

Dental implants act as artificial roots, they are placed into the jawbone to provide anchorage for the dental crown or bridge. They are the best replacement for missing teeth and provided they are well cared for could last for 20-30 years.

All On Four Dental Implant Solutions (Full Mouth Rehabilitation) -

The Implantologist places 4 implants into the jaw and a denture or dental bridge is placed directly on top. Restoring your whole smile and giving you natural-looking and fully functioning teeth in just 1 day.

Dentures -

Dentures are removable appliances used to replace missing teeth. Dentures are a durable and low-cost replacement for missing teeth. However, they are not as aesthetically pleasing or as comfortable as dental implants and will need to be removed for cleaning and sleeping.

Medical History - Why We Need To Know

Taking a patient’s medical history is vital to increase the dental practitioner’s awareness of any diseases or medications which could interfere with dental treatment.

Dentists are legally obligated to not only check and confirm a patient’s medical history but to also only provide treatment if it is safe to do so. Every new patient who joins S3 Dental will need to fill out a medical history form and existing patients will be required to resubmit an up-to-date medical history form annually. Patients who fail to disclose their full medical history risk compromising their own health but also jeopardising the treating clinicians’ professional obligations.

Why does the dentist need to know what medication you take?

In order to ensure all planned treatment is safe to carry out an up-to-date list of medications is vital. Some medications may mean it is not safe for your treatment to be carried out in the dental practice and you may need to be referred to a specialist. Other medications such as blood thinners may require you to have a blood test to check your INR levels before extracting a tooth.

What conditions affect your dental treatment?

Pregnancy – During pregnancy, you may find your gums bleed more and may require extra attention. For those who suffer from morning sickness, you may find the acid causes tooth wear. Your dentist is also likely to delay taking radiographs until after the baby is born.

Epilepsy – Stress or anxiety can bring on an epileptic seizure so it is important your dentist is aware and can take extra measures to make sure you are comfortable and relaxed.

Diabetes – People with diabetes generally take longer to heal after treatment and often suffer from periodontal disease (gum disease).  It is important for your dentist to be aware so they can keep on top of your gum health. They may recommend regular visits to Lucy our hygienist.

Weakened Immune System – Before performing dental treatments your dentist may decide it is necessary for you to take premedication (antibiotic cover) to prevent the bacteria from entering the bloodstream and causing infection elsewhere in the body.

Allergies – It is very important the dentist is aware of any allergies before prescribing a treatment or medication. To prevent unnecessary and potentially very dangerous allergic reactions make sure your dentist is aware of any allergies to medication, foods and materials.

Rheumatic Fever Or Heart Complaints – It is not always necessary to prescribe antibiotic cover to people suffering from rheumatic fever or other heart conditions however the dentist may decide to use an anaesthetic which doesn’t contain adrenaline.

Antibiotic Cover.

Some patients require antibiotic cover before we can provide any dental treatment. For some patients, even a simple clean with the hygienist requires premedication (antibiotic cover) to prevent the risk of infective endocarditis. Patients will be advised by their doctors to take this prior to treatment and we will need to know this before we start any dental work. Patients who fail to take the appropriate cover for their appointment will be asked to rebook and still be charged a fee for the appointment time.

All information obtained is kept confidential and will only be used to ensure our patients receive the best care possible. If you have any medical conditions you think we should be aware of please let your dentist know at your next appointment.

How Ageing Affects Your Mouth

Like the rest of your body, your mouth changes as you age. Decades of chewing, biting and grinding can affect the appearance and function of your teeth.

Common effects of ageing -

Tooth Wear - Providing that your teeth are well looked after, there is no reason why they can’t last your entire life. Diets that are high in sugars and acidic foods and drinks will cause wear on your teeth. The enamel will become weak and could cause your teeth to chip or crack.

Tooth Discolouration - you might have noticed that your once sparkling white smile has become more yellow as you have aged. This is due to the thinning of the enamel which has left the dentin layer of your teeth exposed.

Receding Gums - As we age the gum tissue loosens around the teeth, and bacteria can easily build up in these pockets around your teeth and causing inflammation and eventually periodontal disease and dental decay. If left untreated both periodontal disease and decay will lead to tooth loss.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles - Smile lines are fine lines and wrinkles which develop around the sides of your mouth. They occur naturally as our skin loses collagen, but certain lifestyle choices such as smoking, drinking alcohol, not getting enough sleep and dehydration will speed up the process.

While we should always be grateful to have had the privilege of ageing, we are also lucky enough to have the privilege of ageing gracefully.

How we can help.

Teeth Whitening - According to a recent survey, whiter teeth can make you appear more successful, more attractive and can even knock up to 10 years off your estimated age.

Smile Makeover - Whether it’s composite veneers, teeth straightening, porcelain veneers or dental implants a smile makeover can dramatically transform your overall appearance. Replacing missing teeth or repairing broken teeth will make eating and chewing a lot easier and more effective.

Hygienist - A good clean of your teeth will not just improve your gum health but also remove any stains that have built up on your teeth.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections/Dermal Fillers - Injectables are a safe effective way to reduce fine lines and plump up thinning lips. Relaxing muscles and adding fullness to areas of the face can make people appear dramatically more youthful.
